I’m working on mounting my license plate and need some advice on what size screws to use. I’ve heard that different vehicles might require different screw sizes, so I want to make sure I’m getting the right ones for my car.
Here are some details about my situation:
- Vehicle Model: 2018 Honda Civic
- Current Condition: No screws came with the plate
- Replacement or New Mounting: Just looking to mount a new plate
Also, if anyone has recommendations on screw materials, I’d prefer something that won’t rust easily, especially since I live in an area with a lot of rain. Stainless steel options seem appealing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! What size screws should I be looking for, and any tips for installation would also be awesome!
You’ll typically want to use #14 screws for attaching license plates. They are common and fit most vehicle brackets. Make sure they’re about 1 inch long for standard use.
I’ve found that stainless steel screws are great because they resist rust and corrosion. A good choice if you live in a rainy area!

You might also consider plastic screws if you want a lightweight option. They won’t rust, but they can break more easily under pressure. Just something to think about.
Stainless steel is a solid pick, but don’t overlook the benefits of using coated screws which can prevent scratching and enhance grip.
Are there specific length recommendations depending on different car models? I’ve had issues with screws that were too long or short in the past.
Good question, scottallen! Generally, 1 inch should fit most. However, certain vehicles might require a different length due to how the brackets are designed.

I always go for #14 screws with a hex head for better grip. They make the installation much easier without any slipping.
Hex heads are cool, but have you tried using Phillips heads? They can be easier to find in multi-packs at the store.
I think #8 screws are also a viable option! They’re smaller, but depending on how snugly your plate fits, they might work just as well.
While #8 can work, I’d caution against using them if your license plate has any weight to it. It’s all about finding the right balance!
Remember to check the head design before purchasing! Some screws may not fit the decorative holes in customized plates.
I just make sure to keep a few sizes on hand. You never know when you’ll need a different one, right? Better safe than sorry!
You’ll typically need #6 or #8 screws for license plates. Make sure they’re stainless steel to prevent rust! Always use a flathead screwdriver for installation. It just makes things easier.
Great tip! Also, consider using washers to distribute the pressure better and avoid damaging your vehicle’s finish.
Don’t forget to check the torque! You don’t want to overtighten and strip the threads. A gentle hand is key here.

That’s crucial! I once stripped a screw because I was too aggressive. If you can, use a torque wrench to get it just right!
Using the right tools is key! A ratchet set works wonders, and it saves you from hand fatigue. Good luck!

Definitely! Or even a power drill with the right bit. Just be careful not to go full speed— you don’t want to mess anything up!

I prefer using nylon screws. They won’t rust and are a bit more forgiving if you accidentally overtighten them. Anyone else tried that?
