Anyone else getting 'Engine Not Available' on their Chevy Volt?

I’ve been dealing with an annoying issue recently with my Chevy Volt – it keeps displaying the message ‘Engine Not Available,’ and I’m at my wits’ end trying to figure it out. It’s frustrating because it also triggers the ‘Propulsion Power Reduced’ warning, making it hard to drive, especially if I need to rush somewhere.

I took it to my mechanic, and they mentioned it could be a few different issues, like problems with the high-voltage battery system or a malfunctioning engine sensor.

I wanted to reach out to the community to see if anyone else has faced this issue:

  • What have your experiences been like? Did you find any quick fixes?
  • What steps did you take to troubleshoot it?
  • Did any error codes help you narrow down the causes?

I’m hoping we can pool our knowledge to help each other out. Let’s share any tips or tricks that might get our Volts back on the road without headaches!

I’ve been getting the ‘Engine Not Available’ message on my Volt as well. It usually comes with a warning light and a significant loss of power.

Exactly! I noticed that my battery doesn’t seem to charge properly either when that happens.

For me, it started with odd noises from under the hood before the warning light appeared. Has anyone else experienced that?

Yes! Sometimes it sounds like a grinding noise, and then the engine just goes dead. Very unsettling!

I think the key symptom is the ‘check engine’ light; when that lights up, it’s usually trouble. Plus, it won’t let you switch to gas mode.

I’ve also experienced loss of power, and the acceleration feels sluggish all of a sudden. Has anyone had success fixing this?

I’m in the same boat! It’s frustrating not knowing when it will happen again.

I wonder if this is a known issue with certain year models of the Volt. It seems like many are reporting similar symptoms.

Definitely a trend. My mechanic mentioned something about a potential programming issue; might be worth looking into.

Anyone else have quirky behavior with the dashboard? Sometimes my battery meter behaves oddly before the engine issue surfaces.

Yes! My dashboard lights up like it’s a Christmas tree when this happens. Very strange!

It’s reassuring to know I’m not alone. I keep envisioning all the money spent on repairs because of this issue.

I heard that sometimes a software update can fix these glitches. Have any of you tried that yet?

After the update, things got a little better for me. Still, I can’t shake the feeling this is a bigger problem waiting to happen.

I feel you on that! I’m still wary, and some days I just don’t trust my Volt to perform.

You guys, on a lighter note, at least we can share some Volt horror stories! Ever thought about starting a support group?

I’m getting ‘Engine Not Available’ on my Volt too! It started when I was driving on the highway. Does anyone know what might cause this?

Same thing happened to me after a long trip! I found checking the battery voltage helps. Maybe it’s related to the hybrid system rather than the engine itself?

If the battery is low, the engine might not engage. Check your dashboard for warning lights. Has anyone tried manually resetting the system?
